BINA - Center for Jewish Identity and Hebrew Culture strives to strengthen Israel as a democratic, pluralistic society, emphasizing cultural, and community aspects of Judaism. BINA was established over thirteen years ago, as a response to the breakdown in public trust and unity in the aftermath of the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.
BINA designs and implements cultural, social and educational programs reaching close to 1000 Israelis annually in year-long programs. It offers seminars and public events for more than 13,000 participants every year, with the goal of enhancing Jewish and Zionist identity of non-orthodox Israelis. The foundations of BINA’s innovative programs are: Jewish Study, Social Action/Social Justice, Community and Leadership. BINA’s combination study/service programs focus on young adults - today’s agents of change, tomorrow’s leaders - with the aim of inspiring a lifelong appreciation of textual study and social justice.
BINA's programs include pre-army and post-army groups studying and volunteering in the neighborhood, groups for Russian immigrants, and an award-winning post-college program for Jewish activists from around the world called Tikkun Olam, which is supported by Masa Israel.
Mechinat BINA (Pre-Army Program), established five years ago, is a 10 month program for 18-19 year old Israelis at The Secular Yeshiva in Tel-Aviv. The program seeks to cultivate a generation of leaders with an in-depth familiarity with Jewish culture past and present, who view social activism and volunteering as central values by which to live.
The Secular Yeshiva at Bina aims to be a home for students (aged 18-30) to experience significant learning and encounter a wide range of thinking and thinkers. Programs at the yeshiva allow participants to embark on a fascinating journey, which exposes them to a rich variety of views and assists them in formulating their own perspectives. Students live in South Tel-Aviv and are confronted with some of the most pressing issues in contemporary Israeli society. In addition to intensive study, all Yeshiva students take part in “Tikun Olam” community service and social welfare projects in the underserved communities of South Tel Aviv, where the Yeshiva is located.

Mechina literally means "to prepare." The name of our program is an Israeli term, referring to a year of studies and social action after graduating high school. Our Mechina at BINA combines Jewish studies and social action, seeking to educate young Jews about important tenets of Judaism, and about how to put them into practice with social action and grassroots activism in the neediest parts of Tel Aviv-Jaffa.
The BINA Secular Yeshiva is the only non-orthodox institute of its kind in Israel today. Young adults study Jewish texts and Jewish culture intensively from sources ranging from the Bible and Gemara to classic Israeli literature and Zionist history. Students learn with renowned experts from the fields of academia, Jewish scholarship and social activism, and then discuss the texts in “hevrutah” or study pairs. The Secular Yeshiva, established in 2006, has close to 200 students enrolled this year. It operates out of a facility allocated by the Tel-Aviv municipality adjacent to the New Central Bus Station of Tel-Aviv.
The Secular Yeshiva is emerging as a spiritual-cultural center in the heart of Tel-Aviv. Many cultural and educational activities are offered to the student and young adult population of Tel Aviv. Kabbalat Shabbat and holiday services are often open to the public.

BINA encourages its students to live as a group using communal resources. This means many daily living decisions are made as a group, democratically and by discussion. In addition, the group has a joint sum of money which is used collectively for buying groceries and other necessities, meals are usually cooked together.
Israeli and American Mechina participants will live in a shared residence in the neighborhood nearby the yeshiva, and will volunteer together in the neighborhood. Participants will be paired-up or work as a group in the same schools, day care centers and other volunteer placements. Many of the program trips and tours will be together too.

Participants will live in apartments situated in the south Tel Aviv neighborhood of Shapira. The apartments are fully furnished and equipped with kitchen appliances, and accessories. Accommodation will be shared with your Israeli peers. Please note you will be sharing a room with one or two roommates.
Although the apartments are well maintained and comfortable, , it is important to remember that they are located in a lower class neighborhood, and may not be up to the standards that some participants are used to. Even so, the apartments are more than satisfactory and perfectly suitable for long-term living situations.
The Mechina apartments are located in the Shapira neighborhoods of South Tel Aviv. They are conveniently located around 10 minutes (walk) from the Tel Aviv New Central Bus Station and Hagannah Train Station. This is where the BINA Secular Yeshiva is located and where studies will take place. Apartments are just a short bus ride from the center of Tel Aviv, thus making all of Tel Aviv easily accessible to the participants.

During the Ulpan classes, participants will be split into groups according to their level of Hebrew knowledge. Prior to the start of the program, our Ulpan teachers will send each participant a diagnostic test, which they use to place each person in the appropriate level so that everyone should feel that he or she is being challenged in Hebrew class.
In some cases, a participant may speak Hebrew well enough to not require Ulpan at all. This should not discourage anyone from signing up for the program! The Mechina staff and Ulpan teachers will make decisions on a case-by-case basis to ensure that all participants are using their time wisely. In some cases, this may mean that a participant will be exempt from Ulpan, but only if that participant exhibits a very advanced level of Hebrew fluency.
